Ghazal and Varun Alagh started Mamaearth in September 2016 with the goal of making skincare regimens not just sophisticated but also extremely meticulous. Mamaearth, an online seller of organic and toxin-free skin care products, is well-known in the Indian cosmetics industry. The business is situated in Gurugram.

Regarding the cosmetics sector, customers are constantly worried about the procedures used in product manufacturing. This is the reason for the advent of a new age in cosmetics: organic, naturally derived, and made with the use of natural goods devoid of chemicals and poisons

The fact that these organic products are safe for our skin, hair, digestive systems, and overall well-being is what has caused such a stir in the market. With the help of this desire for organic products, Mamaearth has grown into a successful cosmetics firm and has earned the American Made Safe Certification—the first nontoxic label for products in use today.

Mamaearth: Overview and Operation

Mamaearth's unique product line has aimed to address a common parenting difficulty in India. In a country where the majority of baby products on the market violate safety regulations, Mamaearth provides baby items that are safe by international standards and filled with the delicacy of nature.

Many people hail Mamaearth as the first Asian company to earn the "MADE SAFE" certification. All known toxins that are prohibited in the majority of nations are absent from the items that the company offers to the general public. Mamaearth is more than just a commercial brand because it produces things with love and care. If you're curious about Mamaearth's nationality or place of origin, Gurugram (Gurgaon), India is home to the company's headquarters.

Mamaearth's team and founders

Ghazal and Varun Alagh, the co-founders of Mamaearth, established Honasa Consumer Private Limited in 2016 and introduced the Mamaearth line of toxin-free goods in December of the same year. The couple's goal was to provide all babies in India with safe, chemical-free items. Today, the business produces organic products for babies, parents, grandparents, and the general public.

Varun Alagh

Varun Alagh, Chief Dad of Mamaearth, Get Stuff Done Officer, and Co-Founder of Mamaearth, comes from the FMCG sector. After earning a BE in Electrical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering, Varun Alagh went on to XLRI Jamshedpur for his MBA in Finance and Marketing. Before starting Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd., the parent business of Mamaearth, Varun held important executive positions at Hindustan Unilever, Smirnoff, and The Coca-Cola business. He is well-known for his proficiency in brand management.

Ghazal Alagh

Another co-founder of Mamaearth, Ghazal Alagh, holds the title of Chief Innovation Officer. Ghazal graduated from Punjab University with a BCA in information technology. She then held a position as a Corporate Trainer at NIIT. In February 2012, she started Dietexpert, then in 2016, she started Mamaearth under Honasa. Ghazal is regarded as one of the top 10 female artists in India and throughout the world. She also took intensive courses in modern art and applied arts at the School of Visual Arts and the New York Academy of Art.

As a'mum-powered' firm, we collaborate with numerous mothers who contribute to every stage of the process, from inspiration and conceptualization to the actual launch of the product. We think that the primary factor influencing success will still be this relationship with mothers. More than 200 young mothers work with us to help us develop the goods' concepts and formulas. The mothers then test these goods, and according to Ghazal Alagh, only those that receive positive feedback are allowed to go into mass manufacturing.

Ownership of Mamaearth

According to the DRHP, the company's two founders, Varun Alagh and Ghazal Alagh, own 43.54% of the company's shares, with Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital), Fireside Ventures, and Stellaris owning 20.94%, 15.01%, and 11.24% of the company's shares, respectively.

Mamaearth - Startup Success Story How did Mamaearth come to be?

The hazardous chemicals present in the most regularly used personal care and baby care products are well known in the United States. During her stay, Ghazal grew more careful of the items she was using and began scrutinizing the contents list before purchasing any infant care item.

When Varun and Ghazal were expecting their first child (they were in India at the time), they discovered that the baby care products they found contained hazardous poisons and that safer alternatives were unavailable. Because the husband-wife team couldn't discover any safe baby items in India, they stopped utilizing Indian products and instead bought dependable products made in other nations.

They ultimately began ordering things from the United States, but this proved to be an expensive and difficult arrangement. Furthermore, they understood that it wasn't just them; in fact, there are far too many parents in India who share their concern.

However, after failing to find a solution, Varun and Ghazal Alagh studied ways to make infant goods safer and cheaper. They spent sleepless nights planning the launch of a new brand, assembling a dedicated R&D team, and applying for necessary certifications.

All of this culminated in Mamaearth, which quickly became Asia's first brand to offer "MADE SAFE" certified items that were toxin-free and brimming with the natural goodness that babies deserve

The world is a safer place for babies and their parents because we are constantly developing and improving as part of our aim to decrease parental stress, says Ghazal Alagh.

Mamaearth began with an investment of approximately Rs 90 lakh, which Varun and Ghazal made out of their own money. This was followed in 2016 by the Seed investment.

Mamaearth is an online store specializing in organic products for babies, mothers, grandparents and more.

Mamaearth – Start a startup

The Mamaearth team believes in the power of mothers and has decided to focus its activities specifically on mothers. The founders believed that once customers started using Mamaearth products, the company would benefit greatly from word of mouth. The team also harnessed the power of social media through influencer marketing.

One of the main goals was to connect with other parents who care about their children's well-being.When it comes to customer acquisition, the focus is exclusively on digital content.

We want our customers to know what problems our solutions solve and why they are the best on the market. We have over 500 mom bloggers on our team. According to Ghazal Alagh, “We are constantly innovating to stay relevant and meet the changing needs of the market.”

The Lean Innovation Cycle was the most important project that helped Mamaearth achieve its growth rate; It is designed to start, learn and scale quickly.Lean innovations allowed them to focus on identifying specificcustomer needs. In addition, real-time testing allowed several product concepts to be validated and refined. This contributed to higher customer satisfaction and faster time to market.

Mamaearth - Startup Obstacles

Every organization confronts difficulties in its early years, and Mamaearth was no exception. Mamaearth had a growth stumbling block early on, preventing it from expanding as planned. The team realized the issue was due to a lack of focus on the target cohort, which resulted in wasteful marketing expense and minimal customer acquisition.

The core team conducted an internal rethinking and decided to redefine the target group as well as the communication approach centered on the target group. Once the technique was applied, the team could notice considerable results in a short amount of time.

The cosmetics sector is densely packed with multiple dominant companies, both foreign and Indian, that maintain constant competition in the space.
