The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited, or IRCTC for short, is a Central Public Sector Enterprise that works with the Indian Railways Ministry of the Government of India to offer services including ticketing, catering, and tourism for the Indian Railways.

It is reasonable to state that there is a year-round need for catering services. Through a range of channels created to meet the needs of the clientele, the catering business offers services to millions of customers globally. There are other channels as well, though event catering is arguably the most well-known.

The catering industry is incredibly large and expanding in India. Not only are birthdays and weddings being discussed, but train catering is another topic that catches people's attention.

These days, the government and a few certified private contractors oversee the catering services provided by the railways. As of right now, IRCTC is India's biggest government-owned catering company.

The organization was established in 1999 as an extension of Indian Railways with the goal of managing the general culinary and hospitality division at railway stations.

IRCTC - Overview

IRCTC, also known as the Mini Ratna (Category-I), is owned by the Central Public Sector Enterprise, which is a division of the Indian government's Ministry of Railways. The company was founded with the intention of taking over all catering and hospitality services at each station and developing low-cost lodging, distinctive tour packages, educational and promotional materials, and worldwide reservation systems to support the growth of domestic and foreign travel in India.

The IRCTC's main administrative headquarters is in New Delhi, with regional offices in Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Bhopal, Ahmadabad, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ernakulam, and Bangalore.  New Delhi is home to the ticketing and tourist agencies.

IRCTC - Business

IRCTC is a part of the hospitality and catering sector. The country's railway network began in the nineteenth century. As more individuals began to travel across the nation, the pace of travel began to slowly increase up during that time. These travelers required food and drink for their voyage.

Smt. Hasija has worked for Indian Railways for more than 29 years. She has also held numerous administrative positions and participated in a number of public sector projects. Her contribution to the development of the railroads' online ticketing facility, www.irctc.co.in, was groundbreaking.

Smt. Hasija has also effectively finished a number of time-sensitive initiatives for IRCTC, such as organizing and implementing the dynamic online cum counter ticketing infrastructure for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and promoting the Maharajas' Express Luxury Tourist Train internationally.

The Startup Story of IRCTC

The Ministry of Railways' goal for the company's incorporation in 1999 marked the beginning of IRCTC's history. The Indian government formerly owned IRCTC in its entirety. However, in 2019, the company was listed on the National Stock Exchange, and the government still holds a majority stake in it. At IRCTC, the government holds around 67% of the shares.

The only company authorized to provide particular services to Indian Railways is IRCTC. They are permitted to provide services like catering, online ticket sales, and packaged drinking water sales on trains and at train stops. It gained some financial independence in May 2008 when it was designated as a Mini Ratna public corporation.

IRCTC takes pride in being one of the county's biggest providers of hospitality and catering services. IRCTC's catering operations are dispersed throughout all Indian passenger trains, railway stations, and the area surrounding the station.

There are three divisions within the hospitality and catering industry:

Catering Company on Wheels

In more than 460 passenger trains with pantry cars, including the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Gatimaan Express, Mail/Express, and the recently launched Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Trains, IRCTC is in charge of all onboard catering operations for Indian Railways.

The pantry cars, which provide the onboard catering services, are installed in each of these trains.

Other Services for Catering (OCS)

Static Caterers

IRCTC also has static catering businesses under this business. The fact that IRCTC also oversees train side vending (TSV) on Mail/Express and Superfast trains—which lack pantry cars—is a humorous fact.

The onboard merchants use TSVs to process orders from customers who have been presented with the menu chart. After the prescribed order is confirmed, the food is subsequently picked up by vendors at the authorized "meal pick-up places", and it is then given to the passengers

Basic Kitchen Designs

Base Kitchens is another one of IRCTC's static businesses. In order to provide top-notch meals for all of its passengers aboard trains, the Ministry of Railways renovated 46 base kitchens in total.

These kitchens are being constructed and will have contemporary technology installed. In addition, the Ministry of Railways plans to soon activate QR code capabilities on lunch packets and live feed CCTC cameras into the public domain.

IRCTC engages in several auxiliary business operations in addition to these two main companies. They have cell kitchens, Food Plazas, fast food restaurants, and refreshment rooms.

IRCTC - Difficulties Met

The Mumbai police filed a charge against the IRCTC in 2016 for failing to preserve the data of its consumers. The corporation was accused of being engaged in the breach of its 10 million clients' confidential information.

In addition, the corporation was accused of data breaches and exposures, and there are concerns that the government may have used passenger data to send out tailored ads.

During the Indian farmers' protests in 2020–2021, IRCTC encountered yet another difficulty. The corporation was criticised for sending emails without its customer's content.

The email, with the subject line "PM Modi and his government's special relationship with Sikhs," promoted government policies to Sikh farmers who are protesting. It was later discovered that the purpose of these emails was to spread official messaging.
