Anand became an executive assistant to the finance director of Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd. (MUSCO) in 1981.
He became the President and Deputy Managing Director of MUSCO in 1989. It was under his leadership that the Mahindra Group began to expand into new commercial sectors, including hospitality management and real estate development.
He joined Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., an Indian manufacturer of agricultural tractors and off-road vehicles, on April 4, 1991, and assumed the position of Deputy Managing Director. Anand joined Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. as Managing Director in April 1997 and Vice Chairman in 2001.
August 2012 saw him succeed his uncle Keshub Mahindra as Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of the Mahindra Group.
Anand retained his position as Chairman of the Mahindra Group but was renamed as Executive Chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd in November 2016.Once upon a time, Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. was the name of the bank that Anand co-sponsored.
