Life will continually provide problems that must be overcome. No matter how challenging the times, if we put in the necessary effort, are patient, and have faith in our abilities, we can accomplish our objectives. Kalpana Saroj, a Dalit lady from Maharashtra who was married off at the age of twelve and endured domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, has a similar story to tell. Despite all the obstacles she experienced, Kalpana managed to build a business empire valued at Rs 900 crore.
The life of Kalpana Saroj demonstrates how a woman overcame numerous obstacles and gained invaluable insight into the significance of perseverance and hard effort in achieving goals.
Some highlights of her life :
- Childhood: Saroj, the eldest of three daughters and two sons, was born in 1961 to a Marathi Buddhist family in the village of Roperkheda near Akola, Maharashtra, India. Saroj's father was an Akola police policeman in the village of Repatkhed.
- Qualification: Her father insisted that she must at least be a "matriculate," therefore she only studied up to the seventh grade. Within our samaj, or community, girls were prohibited from attending school. There was additional opposition since I was a Dalit Buddhist. "Usko chulha chakki hi chalani hai (she has to work in the kitchen)," my family would remark, she says.
- Marriage Life: Kalpana Saroj lived in a Mumbai slum with her husband's family after getting married at the age of twelve. Her father saved her from physical violence at the hands of her husband's family, and she later left her husband and went back to live with her parents in her village. She tried to end her life after the locals shunned her. She returned to Mumbai at the age of sixteen to live with her uncle. In order to provide for her family, she began working at a clothing factory. She successfully launched a furniture store after starting a tailoring business with government loans for scheduled caste members.
About his Success Life:
Like other females from comparable situations, Saroj started taking care of her family and her house. Ten years her senior, she moved to Mumbai to live with her husband.
After being brought to a slum, she was forced to live in a room with the brother and wife of her husband. The way her brother-in-law and his spouse treated her was severe. They both gave Saroj a beating. She was emotionally and physically abused to the point where she broke.
Six months after her marriage, as the abuse increased, her father finally met her, but he was unable to identify her.
He led her back and instructed her to start her studies. But going back to one's mother's house as a daughter was frowned upon in their culture. This situation also caused stress for her parents.
Her parents were tortured by society in addition to her. Returning to one's mother's house after marriage was strongly discouraged. She attempted suicide by swallowing three bottles of pesticide when she was sixteen years old due to the intolerable circumstances and misery.
But the world had other ideas for her, and Saroj's aunt intervened just in time to save her. Saroj's viewpoint changed as a result of this experience, and she began to appreciate life.
Rather than being scared by the villagers' mocking words, she took it as a challenge and decided to overcome the situation because she wanted to live. To support her family, she returned to Mumbai to live with her uncle and began working in a clothing factory.
She quickly borrowed Rs 50,000 thanks to her astute financial sense, and she acquired a sewing machine to launch a tailoring company in addition to attempting to construct a furniture store.
To document the struggles and horrors a Dalit family endured in Khairlanji, Maharashtra, Kalpana even founded a film production company and produced a commercial film, Khairlanjichya Mathyawar.
She wished to make the rest of the world aware of the story and the treatment of Dalits, especially in the present era. Telugu, Hindi, and English dubbing were done for the movie. Kalpana added that there will never be a solution to the issue if the perpetrators are not apprehended and awareness is not increased.
She quickly launched a real estate company and became a board member of the metal engineering company Kamani Tubes. When the business became insolvent from heavy debt, she assumed control.
She took it over and made it become a successful company. Her efforts and services to her areas earned her recognition, and in 2013 she was bestowed with the title of Padma Shri.
Saroj is adamant that technology has revolutionized the world.
In contrast to the past, the government now helps people from all walks of life, and girls are now given new, rising chances. She went on to say that the women needed to be well-trained and that obstacles shouldn't force them to give up.
What we should learn from her life:
- Continue without giving up.
- Keep trying.
- Have faith in oneself.
- Be imaginative.
